  • What Is the Wegovy Pill?

Wegovy pills are once-daily weight loss tablets that contain semaglutide, the same active ingredient in the Wegovy injection. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved the pill as the first-ever glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) weight loss tablet in June 2026.

    How Do Wegovy Pills Work?

The pill mimics the GLP-1 hormone your body naturally produces, activating receptors in the brain to increase feelings of fullness and slow how quickly food leaves your stomach. The medication helps you feel satisfied for longer, even after small meals.

This pill is quite innovative, given that your stomach can't tell the difference between medicine and food.

Under normal circumstances, your digestive system would break down the semaglutide before it can have any effects on your body. To get around this, the manufacturer combined semaglutide with a carrier molecule that protects it long enough for the body to absorb the ingredient.

Once it's in the bloodstream, it works exactly the same way as the injection. However, note that Wegovy pills work best when you eat a healthy diet and exercise more.

    Benefits of the Wegovy Pill

    • Doesn’t Require Needles or Sharps Bins: Pills are best for people who are uncomfortable with injections.
    • Proven Weight Loss in Clinical Trials: Patients can lose up to 22% of their body weight.
    • Better Heart Health: Wegovy is currently the only weight loss medication licensed to reduce the risk of serious cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke.
    • Metabolic Improvements: The pill helps your body manage insulin more effectively, leading to lower blood sugar and better cholesterol profiles.

    Serious But Rare Side Effects

Some people may experience severe reactions from taking Wegovy pills. They include:

    • Pancreatitis: Severe, persistent stomach pain that radiates through to your back with continuous vomiting.
    • Gallbladder Problems: Sudden pain in your upper right abdomen, fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), or clay-colored stools.
    • Acute Kidney Injury: Consistent vomiting and diarrhoea can cause severe dehydration, which strains the kidneys.
    • Low Blood Sugar: Risk increases if you take the pills with other diabetes medications (insulin or sulfonylureas).
    • Allergic Reactions: Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, severe rash, or difficulty breathing.

  • How to Take Wegovy Oral Pills

    1. Take your pills first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, before eating, drinking, or taking any other oral medication.
    2. Swallow whole with no more than 120ml of plain water. Drinking more water than this can dilute the carrier molecule and destroy the semaglutide before it enters the bloodstream.
    3. Do not use sparkling water, coffee, juice, or any other liquid.
    4. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating or taking other medications. Also, avoid drinking anything other than water during this time.
    5. Do not crush, chew, or split the tablet, as it relies on the precise structure to dissolve in a very specific way.
    6. Take the pill at the same time every morning, so it becomes part of your routine.

What to Do If You Miss a Dose

Skip your missed dose and take your next tablet the following morning as normal. Avoid doubling up, as it will have no beneficial effects but could increase side effects. If you miss several doses in a row, speak to your prescriber before continuing.

Frequently asked questions

  • What are Wegovy Pills used for?

Wegovy Pills are used for weight loss and long-term weight management in eligible adults. They help reduce appetite, control cravings and support lower calorie intake when combined with a healthy diet and increased physical activity. As the first GLP-1 weight loss pills approved in the UK, they provide a convenient alternative to injections.

  • How do Wegovy Pills help with weight loss?

Wegovy Pills contain semaglutide, which works by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone. This helps regulate appetite, increases feelings of fullness and reduces hunger. As a result, patients often consume fewer calories, supporting sustainable and clinically meaningful weight loss.

  • Are Wegovy Pills as effective as Wegovy injections?

Clinical trials for the pills and the injection show similar weight-loss results. People taking the highest daily dose of the Wegovy pill (25mg) lost about 14% to 16.6% of their body weight, while those using the standard weekly Wegovy injection (2.4mg) lost about 15% to 17.5%. However, the highest injection dose of 7.2mg can lead to weight loss of about 21%.

  • Who can be prescribed Wegovy Pills in the UK?

Wegovy Pills may be prescribed to adults with obesity or adults who are overweight and have weight-related health conditions. Eligibility depends on BMI, medical history and an assessment by a qualified prescriber.

  • Do I need a prescription for Wegovy Pills?

Yes. If you’re going to buy a Wegovy pill, UK regulations require you to complete a medical assessment that ensures the treatment is safe and appropriate for your goals. With Curely, you can complete your consultation online from the comfort of your home and receive the medication discreetly at your doorstep.
