Foundayo vs Wegovy Pill: Which Oral Weight Loss Tablet Is Better?

Foundayo and the Wegovy pill are two new once-daily GLP-1 tablets competing for a place in the UK’s growing weight-loss market.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) authorised Foundayo on 10 August 2026. It is not yet commercially available in the UK, although Eli Lilly expects its private launch later in August (Reuters, 2026).

The Wegovy pill, on the other hand, became the first oral GLP-1 medicine approved in the UK for weight loss when the MHRA authorised it on 11 June 2026. Unlike Foundayo, Wegovy pills are already available through UK private pharmacies and clinics such as Curely.

Despite their shared GLP-1 classification, Foundayo and the Wegovy pill contain different types of molecules.

Foundayo is the brand name for orforglipron, a once-daily oral GLP-1 receptor agonist developed by Eli Lilly.

The MHRA authorised orforglipron in the UK on 10 August 2026 for weight loss and weight maintenance in adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 to 30 with at least one weight-related health condition.

Orforglipron also helps improve blood glucose control in adults with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes, according to the MHRA (2026).

Like other GLP-1 medicines, Foundayo acts on receptors involved in appetite regulation. This reduces appetite and may lower food intake (Bain et al., 2025).  The MHRA says you should use it alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity rather than as a replacement for lifestyle changes.

The Wegovy pill is the oral form of semaglutide, which is the same active ingredient in injectable Wegovy.

The MHRA approved the Wegovy tablet for weight management in the UK in June 2026. UK-licensed healthcare professionals prescribe it alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or adults with a BMI from 27 to below 30 who have at least one weight-related comorbidity.

Active Ingredients and How They Work

Foundayo contains orforglipron, and semaglutide is the active ingredient in Wegovy.

Both medicines are GLP-1 receptor agonists. They act on the GLP-1 receptor, which plays a role in appetite and food intake. These weight-loss medicines do so by activating the GLP-1 receptor pathway.

There is, however, a structural difference between the two.

Orforglipron is a small-molecule, non-peptide GLP-1 receptor agonist. This is one reason it can be formulated as a tablet that does not require fasting or restrictions around food and water.

Semaglutide, on the other hand, is a peptide GLP-1 analogue. Oral semaglutide uses a formulation designed to help the medicine survive and be absorbed through the digestive system. Its absorption is affected by food and water, which explains the stricter instructions for the Wegovy tablet.

Dosage Strength and Dose Escalation

Neither medicine starts at its full dose. Gradually increasing the dose gives the body time to adjust and may reduce gastrointestinal side effects.

Foundayo Dose Escalation

The UK-approved Foundayo schedule starts at 0.8 mg once daily.

After that, prescribers can adjust the dose up to 17.2 mg once daily based on treatment response and tolerability:

• 0.8 mg once daily
• 2.5 mg once daily
• 5.5 mg once daily
• 9 mg once daily
• 14.5 mg once daily
• 17.2 mg once daily

Foundayo recommends spending at least one month at each dose level. This helps the body adjust to the increasing dose.

Wegovy Pill Dose Escalation

The oral Wegovy schedule is:

• Month 1: 1.5 mg once daily
• Month 2: 4 mg once daily
• Month 3: 9 mg once daily
• Month 4 onwards: 25 mg once daily

The 25 mg dose is the recommended maintenance dose, although a prescriber may decide to keep someone at a lower dose if appropriate. 

Administration

Foundayo can be taken once daily at any time. Unlike Wegovy pills, Foundayo does not need to be taken on an empty stomach. Also, there are no specific food or water restrictions linked to it. The tablet is swallowed whole and should not be crushed or chewed.

Wegovy pills require more planning.

The tablet is to be taken after fasting for at least eight hours. It is swallowed whole with a small amount of water, up to 120 mL. After taking it, patients must wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking. Taking food or drink sooner may reduce semaglutide absorption.

Weight Loss Effectiveness

Wegovy pill vs Foundayo have not been directly compared against each other in the same weight-management trials, so there is no available evidence to provide a simple answer.

However, in the 72-week ATTAIN-1 trial, adults without type 2 diabetes who received Foundayo experienced an average body-weight reduction of 7.4% with 5.5 mg, 8.3% with 9 mg and 11.1% with 17.2 mg. The placebo group lost 2.1%.

Among participants who stayed on treatment, the highest Foundayo dose was associated with an average weight reduction of 12.4%.

The OASIS 4 trial investigated 25 mg oral semaglutide in adults with overweight or obesity without diabetes. At week 64, the estimated mean reduction in body weight was 13.6% with oral semaglutide compared with 2.2% with placebo. Gastrointestinal adverse events were reported in 74% of participants receiving oral semaglutide, compared with 42.2% receiving placebo.

These figures suggest that the Wegovy pill produced a higher average weight loss in its pivotal trial than the overall 72-week Foundayo result. But it would be misleading to call Wegovy definitively better.

That’s because the studies had different designs, populations, treatment periods and statistical methods. A direct head-to-head clinical trial would be needed to establish whether one medicine produces greater weight loss than the other in comparable patients.

The aim of weight management treatment is not simply to achieve the highest possible number on the scales. Your clinician will consider your health, response to treatment, side effects and ability to continue treatment over time.

Availability

Wegovy pill is currently available through UK private healthcare providers, so eligible patients can already seek a prescription and order the treatment. Foundayo is coming soon, according to Eli Lily.

For Wegovy pill, availability does not mean that everyone can automatically receive a prescription. Side Effects

Both oral medications can cause gastrointestinal side effects because GLP-1 receptor activation affects appetite and the digestive system.

MHRA reports the following side effects for Foundayo:

• Nausea
• Constipation
• Diarrhoea
• Vomiting
• Indigestion
• Abdominal pain

The Wegovy pill can also cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, indigestion and abdominal pain. In the OASIS 4 trial, 74.0% of participants taking oral semaglutide 25 mg experienced a gastrointestinal adverse event, compared with 42.2% receiving placebo. Nausea occurred in 46.6% of the oral semaglutide group versus 18.6% of the placebo group, while vomiting occurred in 30.9% versus 5.9%, respectively.

Mostly, gastrointestinal symptoms occur during dose escalation and may improve as the body adjusts. 

The official Eli Lily prescribing information reported severe gastrointestinal adverse reactions in approximately 3% of treated patients compared with 1% with placebo during clinical trials.

Safety Warnings

GLP-1 medicines are prescription treatments and are not suitable for everyone.

Both medicines require medical assessment before treatment. So if you have a history of gastrointestinal disease, pancreatitis, kidney problems, gallbladder problems, or diabetes, you shouldn’t take them unless recommended by your clinician.

Wegovy's UK prescribing information warns about gastrointestinal effects and dehydration, pancreatitis, delayed gastric emptying, and aspiration during general anaesthesia or deep sedation. It also contains warnings concerning diabetic retinopathy in people with type 2 diabetes and reports of non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION).

Just like Wegovy, Foundayo also carries warnings relating to gastrointestinal reactions, dehydration, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, hypoglycaemia, and hypersensitivity reactions. 

Its prescribing information also warns about potential thyroid C-cell tumours based on animal studies and contraindicates its use in people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).

This means that everyone taking these medicines should be prescribed and monitored appropriately.

If you develop severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration, difficulty breathing, swelling, or a serious allergic reaction, seek medical advice promptly.

Who is Eligible?

The UK authorisations for both tablets are aimed at adults who meet specific BMI criteria and are looking for an alternative to weekly injections.

For Wegovy tablets, treatment is indicated for adults with:

• A BMI of 30 kg/m² or above, or
• A BMI from 27 to below 30 kg/m² plus at least one weight-related comorbidity.

Foundayo has the same basic BMI thresholds under its UK authorisation: BMI of 30 or above, or BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related comorbidity. Treatment is intended to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

However, meeting the BMI criteria does not automatically mean that you should take either medicine. A prescriber will consider your medical history, current medicines, and individual risks before prescribing.

What Weight Loss Pill Is Better Than Wegovy?

No oral weight-loss pill is proven to be better than Wegovy for everyone. Foundayo may be a better option for some people because it does not require fasting or restrictions on food and water when taking the tablet. Wegovy, however, may be preferable for people who prioritise its established clinical evidence and semaglutide’s demonstrated weight loss results.

But the overall better option depends on expected weight loss, dosing requirements, side effects, convenience, clinical suitability, or anything else that matters to an individual.

Can I Switch from Wegovy to Foundayo?

Yes, you may be able to switch from Wegovy to Foundayo, but you should not switch between the two medicines without guidance from a prescriber

Foundayo and Wegovy contain different active ingredients. There is no reason to assume that the dose of one medicine will be converted into an equivalent dose of the other.

Your prescriber can consider your current Wegovy dose, how well you tolerate it, your weight-management goals, and your medical history before deciding whether a switch is appropriate.

As Foundayo has only just been authorised in the UK and private availability is still being established, access may also depend on whether a legitimate UK pharmacy or prescriber has the medicine.

Why are People Stopping Wegovy?

People may stop Wegovy because of side effects, cost, practical difficulties, or because they are not satisfied with their weight loss results. 

A 2025 research letter published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism studied 350 patients at two multidisciplinary obesity outpatient clinics in Ireland and found that 174 (50%) had discontinued their GLP-1 medication.

Among the 83 patients who provided reasons for stopping, side effects were the most commonly reported reason (36%), followed by logistical challenges (24%), medication cost (23%), supply shortages (11%) and dissatisfaction with weight loss response (7%).

The study included several GLP-1 medicines, with semaglutide being the most commonly used. (Almohaileb et al., 2025) 

What Makes Foundayo Different?

The main difference is convenience.

Foundayo contains orforglipron, a small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist, whereas Wegovy contains semaglutide. Foundayo is taken once daily and does not require an empty stomach or specific restrictions on food and water.

Wegovy tablets must be taken after at least eight hours of fasting, with a small amount of water, followed by at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other oral medicines.

Final Thoughts

We don’t have a clear winner because each offers distinct advantages.

Foundayo has a clear advantage if your priority is administration. You can take it once daily at a time that suits you, with or without food. The Wegovy pill requires an eight-hour fast beforehand and a further 30-minute wait after taking the tablet.

But if your priority is the average weight loss reported in pivotal trials, oral Wegovy currently has the stronger figure, with a 13.6% estimated mean reduction at week 64 in OASIS 4. Foundayo produced an 11.1% average reduction at 72 weeks in the main ATTAIN-1 analysis, rising to 12.4% among participants who remained on treatment at the highest dose.

These are not head-to-head results. It would be wrong to assume that the difference will be identical for an individual patient.

The best choice depends on factors such as your health, previous treatment, expected response, side-effect tolerance, medication availability, and how easily you can follow the dosing instructions.
